Thailand Visa Requirements 2026: Complete Guide by Nationality

ThailandForAll Editorial · 18.06.2026

Thailand made major visa reforms in 2024-2025 that benefit most international travelers. Most Western passport holders can now enter visa-free for 60 days — doubled from the previous 30 days. Visa-on-arrival is available for additional nationalities. Long-stay tourist visas allow 60-day or 6-month stays. This is the complete, current 2026 guide.

The 2024 Visa-Free Expansion

In July 2024, Thailand expanded visa-free entry from 30 days to 60 days for 93 nationalities. This is the largest visa liberalization in Thai history.

Visa-Free (60 days) — 93 Nationalities

If you hold one of these passports, you can enter Thailand WITHOUT a visa for up to 60 days per entry. You can also extend ONCE for an additional 30 days at any Thai immigration office (1900 THB fee, no exit required).

Total maximum stay without leaving: 90 days.

Extending Visa-Free Stay

  • Chaeng Wattana, Bangkok — main, well-organized, expect 3-hour wait.
  • Phuket Town immigration — small, faster.
  • Chiang Mai Promenada immigration — moved to outskirts, take Grab.

Visa Run / Border Run

If your visa-free 60 days runs out and you want to stay longer:

  • Option 1: Extend at immigration (1900 THB for 30 days)
  • Option 2: Leave and re-enter for another 60 days

Border crossings:

  • Mae Sai (Thai)-Tachileik (Myanmar): day-trip from Chiang Mai. Cross + return same day for new stamp.
  • Nong Khai (Thai)-Vientiane (Laos): overnight in Vientiane. Cheap visa to Laos ($35 for many).
  • Aranyaprathet (Thai)-Poipet (Cambodia): infamous border. Cambodian visa $30. Day trip possible.

Important:

Thailand has cracked down on visa runs. Returning by air from a neighboring country = OK. Land border crossing solely to renew = scrutinized; may only get 30-day stamp not 60-day.

Visa Run Rules to Know

  • 1. Land border: maximum 2 visa-exempt entries per year. Air arrival = unlimited.
  • 2. Immigration officer discretion: they can refuse you if you've been doing repeated visa runs.
  • 3. Multiple short visa runs in a row look suspicious — better to do longer trips out.

Common Visa Mistakes

  • 1. Passport less than 6 months validity: denied boarding at home airport.
  • 2. No return ticket: denied entry at Bangkok airport.
  • 3. Overstay (staying past expiry): 500 THB/day fine + ban from Thailand for 1-10 years depending on overstay length.
  • 4. Lost passport stamp: report to police immediately + apply for new one at immigration.
  • 5. Working on tourist visa: illegal, deportable.

What If You Overstay?

  • 1-90 days overstay: 500 THB/day fine + may be denied future entry for 5 years.
  • 90+ days overstay: more serious — likely ban + jail time.
  • 1+ year overstay: ban from Thailand for 10 years.

If you're going to overstay, GO TO IMMIGRATION before flight to pay fine. Don't try to fly out on overstayed visa — caught at airport = MUCH worse.

Booking Confirmations to Have Ready

  • Return/onward flight: print or email.
  • First night hotel: print booking confirmation.
  • Thailand visa-exempt entry isn't dependent on showing these every time, but airport immigration officers and home country airline staff may ask.

Practical Tips

  • Print copies of passport — keep separate from passport.
  • Note Thai embassy contact in your home city.
  • Take photo of passport stamp when you enter.
  • Track exit date — calendar reminder 1 week before.

Bottom Line

Thailand's visa policy has never been more visitor-friendly. Make the most of it.
